Behind the Scenes: changing of board traditions

As a year comes to an end and a new one begins, all the local NESU boards change and new boards assume power. NESU-Enklaavi, NESU-PorKy, and NESU-Probba share their traditions when it comes to this time of the year.

NESU-Enklaavi

The semester is almost over, which means that the NESU year is also coming to an end. Our autumn meeting has been held and we have chosen the new board for NESU-Enklaavi. Now there’s only one thing left… the last sitz of the year, the PTPJ sitz. These slightly (or maybe slightly more) naughty Christmas sitz are organized together with the next year’s board. It’s our way of making sure that the newcomers get a feel for how we do things around here.

The sitz day is all about planning, getting familiar with organizing, and most importantly, having loads of fun! As usual, we kicked things off with lunch together before heading to the sitz venue. Tables and chairs get moved into place, the photo wall comes together, and the seating charts go up on the walls to wait for the evening. Once everything is set, it’s time for everyone to get changed. The board members get to make their costume for the evening from their boardshirts, which will be put on for the last time. Before the doors open, we gather as a group to boost the vibe and get hyped up for the night. Then, together, we head over to open the doors and get the party started.

People start arriving, the old board gets to enjoy the sitz they’ve organized for the very last time, and the new board gets to step in. The new toastmaster gets thrown straight into action, switching places with the current toastmaster mid-sitz. The vibe is high, and it’s the perfect way for the current board to wrap up the year. The new board has been taught the NESU way, and NESU-Enklaavi will be in good hands.

NESU-Enklaavi’s board 2025 signs off. Thank you!

NESU-PorKy

A traditional theme for NESU-PorKy’s Christmas sitz party has become the company pre-Christmas party. The idea is to bring the legendary workplace pre-Christmas party atmosphere to the last sitz party of the year. In addition, it has also been customary that guests may express seating preferences, and these will be accommodated when possible.

NESU-PorKy’s board thanks everyone for the year!

As the year comes to an end, we take a moment to reflect on what has truly been a remarkable journey for NESU-Probba 2025. Over the past months, we have organized 11 sits events, each with its own theme, atmosphere, and unforgettable moments. Our eight board members have given their very best to make this possible, working with dedication and enthusiasm throughout the year. These events became far more than gatherings: they were shared experiences that brought people together, deepened friendships, and highlighted the strong sense of community that defines NESU-Probba.

NESU-Probba

NESU-Probba’s annual Christmas sits is one of the most anticipated traditions of the year. Held on 29 November 2025, the event brought students together in full festive spirit, dressed in Santa hats, reindeer antlers and all kinds of holiday-themed accessories. The atmosphere is always warm and chaotic in the best way, creating the perfect ending to the sits year. One of the most important traditions of the Christmas sits is the announcement of the new NESU board. The new board is introduced during the evening, and, according to tradition, they also get their first chance to organise and clean the event while the old board supports them. Predecessors and successors sit facing each other so that melliks can be sung about one another throughout the evening, keeping the playful and familiar spirit of NESU sits culture alive. The Christmas sits also includes classic holiday food like rice porridge, gingerbread and joulutorttu pastries. The event is usually more energetic than regular sits, since it is the last one of the year, and many participants bring friends to share the festive mood. Year after year, the same small Christmas-themed traditions, songs and club performances return—especially the iconic “Kossumaa,” sung to the melody of Joulumaa. Together, these traditions make the Christmas sits a highlight of NESU-Probba’s year and a moment of shared celebration before the holidays.

The upcoming transition to Otaniemi in Fall 2026 marks an important milestone. While it is difficult to imagine leaving Mikkeli: a place filled with memories, experiences, and bonds, the move also brings new beginnings and opportunities. Many of us found our sense of belonging here: shared laughter at sits tables, nights spent preparing themes, and the pride of seeing our board grow. These memories will travel with us. As one lyric at our Grand Annual Ball beautifully said:

“I promise to keep the Mikkeli spirit in Otaniemi, because babas are forever.”

It reminds us that NESU-Probba is not defined by location, but by the people, friendships, and traditions we carry forward. To the 2025 board, thank you for your dedication and for shaping this year with heart and commitment. To the new board, we wish you strength and inspiration as you begin the next chapter. And to everyone who has been with us, thank you for being part of a year we will always remember. Mikkeli will always be our home, and its spirit will continue to guide NESU-Probba wherever we go.
